Sherry’s Cherries: Times of Your Life

When I’m asked what my favorite song is, I can never answer. I have favorites in pop music, Broadway, and movies. My recently retired husband, Mark, who is now listening to all of the music he bought in our 55 years together, recently said that our radio station reminds him of Ed Sullivan.

Ed Sullivan?

Then he said that Ed would have The Beatles and The Rolling Stones on the same show as Broadway, pop, and others. On our station we play pop, Broadway, some classical and jazz, and lots of instrumentals. I got it. My personal play lists at home also have songs from pop music, Broadway, movies, etc., all mixed together.

Keep in mind that the songs from the Big Band era were the pop music of their day. They helped the world deal with the trauma of World War II. In the 1940’s and 1950’s Broadway songs were amongst those played on the radio.

I want to thank photographer, Brandy Isadora, who created the image to go with Sherry’s Cherries. She so captured my feelings about my collection of music. Too many songs to be put in one basket or category but loved all the same.

Our new Sherry’s Cherries: Times of Your Life, pays tribute to some musical geniuses of the past.

The story of Fred Astaire is one of the most interesting. When he first auditioned in Hollywood he was severely criticized. One talent scout said, “Can’t sing, is balding, can dance a little.” Ironically from this inauspicious beginning came one of Hollywood’s most glorious stars. He first partnered with Ginger Rogers in a movie called The Gay Divorcee and brought the song and dance, The Continental, to the audiences. They followed this with Top Hat, which featured the Piccolino, one of my all-time favorites.

All together Fred and Ginger made ten movies and he also acted, sang, and danced with Eleanor Powell, Vera Ellen, and gorgeous Rita Hayworth. Fred’s career ultimately spanned 76 years and not only that – Irving Berlin said that Fred was his favorite singer.

We also pay tribute to Lorna Luft, Judy Garland’s daughter. Passing on a voice like that can be both a blessing and a challenge.  All three women Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft were gifted and graced the world with their talents.

Also featured in this tribute are Dionne Warwick, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis (of course), Julie Andrews, sassy Sara Vaughan, The Carpenters and many more. We open with Paul Anka’s  Times of Your Life and close with Barbra Streisand’s On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.

This tribute is dedicated to Mark. He loved the show, and I loved the Ed Sullivan comment.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful music as much as I have.

With a song in my heart.

Sherry
