When I was 22 years old and newly married, my husband and I moved to Arizona. We were in our apartment, and one day, I heard the theme to a movie playing in another room. I said to Mark, “that’s the theme to The Shrike!”
The Shrike was a 1955 film noir starring June Allyson and Jose Ferrer. It was about a brilliant artist and his extremely overbearing wife. I saw this movie as a 7-year-old and did not fully understand it, but I loved the movies, and I went whenever my mother was going. I remembered the theme song from seeing the movie 14 years before.
Over time I realized I loved movie soundtracks and theme songs from the movies. I have been collecting this kind of music for over 50 years and now I get to share it with you.
On Sunday, May 14, Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond pays tribute to great music from the movies. You will hear from composers like John Williams, Max Steiner, Victor Young, and more. There will be vocals as well as instrumentals. You will hear from Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones and others.
This is gorgeous music. I tried it out on Mark, my husband, and he loved it. He got this look on his face and I knew it would be a good show.
What might be interesting for people who like tidbits of information – June Allyson was a wonderful song and dance actress, and she even played Jo in Little Women with Elizabeth Taylor. She always played goodie two shoes. In The Shrike she got to play a nasty character. Although the movie did not do as well as the producers had hoped, June loved it because she got to play someone totally out of character. It was one of her favorite movies.
Another tidbit of information that might be interesting. For those of you who remember Marilyn Monroe’s nude calendar photo from the early 1950’s, I’ve learned that the photoshoot for this picture had Artie Shaw’s Begin the Beguine playing in the background. They once asked Marilyn what she had on during that photoshoot. Her response was, “the radio.”
Enjoy this music. Many will bring back memories, but all will be memorable. You’ll know you have arrived with Barbra Streisand’s On A Clear Day You Can See Forever and we close with The Inn of The Sixth Happiness.
With a song in my heart,
Sherry
PS: I was never able to find the music for The Shrike, but I’ll keep looking.
