Sherry’s Cherries: Heart and Soul

My fondness for Lorenz Hart goes back a long way. He’s one of the first people I’d hug when I cross over. (The other two are Judy Garland and Stephen Sondheim.)

Our next Sherry’s Cherries pays tribute to some of the songs that I could not live without.

You’ll hear voices like Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Carly Simon, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, Keely Smith, and so many wonderful others.

Some of the instrumentals come from Jimmy Dorsey, Percy Faith, and Ray Anthony. I open with Serenata. I have adored this song since childhood when I heard Sarah Vaughan sing it. But this time I am opening the show with Leroy Anderson who composed Serenata. Leroy also composed the breathtaking Sleigh Ride which has been sung by practically everyone. I will play Sleigh Ride for you in another tribute.

It was always my dream to share my music collection with others. This is the music I began collecting as a child. For songs like Begin the Beguine, Night and Day, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, or anything by Larry Hart, I may have thirty versions of that song. When choosing what to pick for a tribute I listen to all thirty versions, pick my top 5-7 and go with number one.

Special attention should be given to Michael Bublé’s My Funny Valentine. It is very different from the other singers but very effective. It reminded me of Larry Hart’s vulnerability and passion.

Also, K. D. Lang’s rendition of Cole Porter’s So In Love is my favorite. I have lots of favorites of this song, but this is my number one first favorite. (If I sound like a ten-year-old, forgive me.)

In another life, a few years ago, my family collected vintage movie posters and we love old movies: musicals, dramas, film noir, etc.

Star Eyes is from a film noir called I Dood It. Seriously. Helen O’Connell sang it in the movie, and she sings it in this tribute.

I have seven versions of Frank Sinatra singing Night and Day. This one from Sinatra and Strings is my favorite.

I never played an instrument, though my daughter plays three, but I was a listener, lover, and collector. I remember songs . . . even the lyrics. So, I dedicate this show to the composers and lyricists who created these masterpieces.

An interesting note: Many years back my friend Cindy would help me make personal play lists. She was much younger than me and was not that familiar with all of the music.

One day we were making a playlist of music and we were putting some Rodgers and Hart music on it. Suddenly, she scooted her chair back and said, “What is that smell coming from my computer? It smells like cigar smoke!” I smelled it too. Larry Hart was a heavy cigar smoker and was always surrounded by cigar smoke. I laughed and thought to myself, well, well, well the veil is indeed very thin.

I’m closing the show with A Song In My Heart composed by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Larry Hart. My closing words are always “with a song in my heart” but this time I will let Ella sing them for me.

With a song in my heart

Sherry
