Sherry’s Cherries: Flight to Neverland

Are you ready to take a flight with me to Neverland courtesy of John Williams? On Sunday, December 4th Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond will take flight to Neverland. Some of my all-time favorites are on this show. Defending Your Life by Michael Gore was the music from Albert Brooks’ movie Defending Your Life. For people who have never seen this movie, try it. Someone once interviewed Albert and asked if he had ever thought about the afterlife. He must have been shocked. He responded with, “Have you ever seen Defending Your Life?” This movie changed my life. The movie and score are the best.

Some of these pieces are instrumental and some are vocal in this special. My husband, a pure listener, without favorites, liked the combo.

You will hear John Williams’ beautiful Catch Me If You Can and Hook – Flight to Neverland. Also featured is a wonderful version of Sleigh Ride composed by Leroy Anderson. Leroy composed this music on a hot summer day. He never intended it to be a Christmas song. He thought it would be perfect for winter festivities. As a child, I was always sad when the holidays were over, and the stations stopped playing Sleigh Ride. Later, Mitchell Parish wrote the lyrics for this piece.

You will also hear from Doris Day, Andy Williams, the McGuire Sisters, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frankie Lane and more.

Many movie themes like Tender is the Night, Picnic, Charade and A Summer’s Place create a mood or ambiance. High Noon tells the story of a movie in a song. A newly married sheriff is about to retire, when he is called upon to take down a very bad guy who threatened him and his town. Gary Cooper was perfect in this role, but for me, Grace Kelly stole the movie at the end. Both she and Gary and Director Fred Zinnemann created a masterpiece.

The Deadwood Stage from Calamity Jane is one of my favorite songs. I was five when I saw this movie and I wanted to be Doris Day. . . or maybe Calamity – either one.

I hope you enjoy these beautiful songs. This show opens with The Race from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express and closes with Hook – Flight to Neverland.

With a song in my heart,

Sherry
