When I shared with photojournalist, Brandy Isadora, that I was doing a show featuring the wonderful Stevie Wonder called Golden Lady, she said she had the perfect photo – it had just won an award and was called Golden Lady.
I lived in Los Angeles from 1979 to 1982. I listened to a radio station KJLH (Kindness Joy Love and Happiness). I discovered some wonderful songs and singers from those days….Sharon Ridley, Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls and so many others. I feature a lot of this music on our station. I later discovered that the station was owned by Stevie Wonder. He truly is wonderful!!!!
I also feature Laura Nyro’s Eli’s Comin’. Remember that one? Laura performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in l967 and her performance followed Jimi Hendrix. Apparently Laura felt the crowd had booed her. It was later discovered that Laura was not booed. Many people called out beautiful! Todd Rundgren was even quoted as saying that after he heard Laura, he started writing music like Laura (and not The Who). Anyway, I call Laura’s perception of what happened that night as Perception Deception. It has happened to other performers and it can be devastating. Artists are sensitive and when it is good, it is very good, but show business is fickle. You have to love what you do.
The show pays tribute to Stevie, The Bee Gees, Seals and Croft, Al Stewart, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas and so many more,
The show debuts this Sunday, August 10th. It begins with Golden Lady and closes with Crosby Stills and Nash’s Just a Song. Showtimes are listed below.
