Music magically travels through genres. In the past, many songs from Broadway shows became the popular songs of their time. Think of Where or When, Once Upon a time, Old Devil Moon, You’ll Never Walk Along, Stranger In Paradise and more. Stranger in Paradise traveled from classical music (Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin) to Broadway’s Kismet by Robert Wright and George Forrest. There are many more like these.
On Sunday, May 11, Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond pays tribute to many beautiful Broadway songs, many that became popular hits.
We feature vocals from Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Ben Vereen, Rosemary Clooney, Josh Groban, and so many more.
I play K.D. Lang’s So in Love by Cole Porter. I have about 30 versions of this song and K.D.’s is my favorite. We also have some beautiful instramentals featuring the one and only Percy Faith.
You will hear from composers and lyricists like Rodgers and Hart and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Lerner and Loewe, Burton Lane and so many more.
The male voice on the song, Lovely, from Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum was sung by Michael Crawford, who would later set records as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera.
Enjoy this beautiful music and the talented artists who bring it to life.
With a Song in my Heart,
Sherry
