Sherry’s Cherries: Come Down in Time

As a teenager, I fell in love with Sergio Mendez’s music. I bought the album, tapes and discs. I had ’em all. Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond is paying tribute to Sergio Mendes, Joni Mitchell, Al Kooper, Al Stewart, The Carpenters, Basia and so many more.

It was interesting and telling. I have two versions of the song, Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. The first was recorded in 1969 in an album called Clouds, and the second from the concept album of 2000 and the difference is amazing. Joni really hadn’t looked at ‘both sides’ in the first. In the 2000 version from you could hear that she truly had truly looked at both sides. As we all do as we get older and look at all sides and hopefully become wiser. I think Joni longed to be like that ‘Free Man in Paris’. Unfettered and alive…but even as success graced her life, it came with challenges and probably compromises.

I also think Rick Nelson truly felt the words in ‘Try to see It My Way’ with Joanie Sommers from a TV Special called On the Flip Side. Rick’s voice and interpretation of this song was wonderful and so recognized. Truly, you would recognize his voice right away.

I have also included Fever Dream from Loggins and Messina and Hummingbird by Seals and Crofts. Although Come Down in Time was written by Elton John, I am playing Al Kooper’s version of this haunting song,

We begin and end with the wonderful Stevie Wonder’s Golden Lady and Ngicuela..

Listen for Swing Out sister, Oleta Adams, Crosby Stills and Nash and a song that can easily be identified with lovely Linda Ronstadt.

Remember these?

With a Song in my heart, Sherry
