Some stories take you to the edge of real possibilities. The Twilight Zone did that. Rod Serling and his writers created that magic. Brandy Isadora’s The Stories of Our Lives takes you to the edge of possibilities and makes you wonder, “What would YOU do in that situation?” And is that even possible? Could it really happen? Many of these stories have won awards.
This month Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond is presenting music from Broadway Shows. Many of the stories from Broadway can also take us to the edge and can bring forth many issues facing our time and what people experience. You will hear from singers like Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Judy Collins, Sarah Vaughan and so many more.
This music was created by many genius composers and lyricists. Richard Rodgers loved Larry Hart. They started out together. They rejoiced at their success when it came. But as time moved forward, it became more difficult for Rogers to cope with Larry’s issues. The pressures of life became too hard for Larry to deal with, and they finally brought an end to his life. He knew in his heart that he was not the one to write the lyrics for what would become the show, Oklahoma. Larry’s words were cutting, sharp and thought provoking.
When Rodgers became partners with Oscar Hammerstein , it was a better fit for Oklahoma. But Larry felt in his heart that it was the end for Rodgers and Hart.. I don’t think Rodgers’ relationship with Hammerstein was even as close as Rodgers and Hart. But their musical collaboration created many of Broadway’s best musicals like Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I and South Pacific and more. So I am featuring both Rodgers and Hart and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
John Kander and Fred Ebb were best friends and writing partners for 40 years until Fred’s death. I saw a performance with the both of them and was struck by how much they loved each other. I am sure that when Fred passed away, John was absolutely heartbroken. On this show I feature The Skin of Our Teeth from them. It is pulsating, and meaningful. One of my favorites.
Stephen Sondheim composed the music and and wrote the words to his music. The show closes with his With So Little To be Sure Of sung by Steve Lawrence. We open with Percy Faith’s instrumental of Stranger in Paradise from Kismet which was originally taken from Alexander Borodin’s music.
These are many beautiful songs. Some you absolutely recognize; some will be new, perhaps even become favorites.
