Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond is happy to present Whistle Down The Wind, Part 2 in our salute to Broadway music. Many of these songs became part of popular music.
You will hear songs from Finian’s Rainbow, Anyone Can Whitsle. Victor/Victoria, South Pacific, Kismet and so many more. Look for artists Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, Frank Sinatra and many more.
The song, Stranger in Paradise, will be played by the one and only Percy Faith as an instrumental and later sung by beautiful Sarah Brightman. In the last blog, I mentioned how Stranger in Paradise came from the classical Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin. It was later adapted to the Broadway show Kismet. It is a haunting melody that has withstood the test of time and has been sung by so many artists.
My Heart Stood Still, interpreted here by Frank Sinatra, came out of an almost accident. Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart were in a car with other passengers when their automobile was almost struck. One of the ladies exclaimed, “my heart stood still!” Larry later said he did not remember this but song titles come from the air into our minds. And Larry traveled in many dimensions.
No Other Love sung here by Perry Como comes from Beneath the Southern Cross from Richard Rodger’s acclaimed tv documentary, Victory at Sea, which gave viewers many glimpses into World War Two. For the show, Juliet and Me, Oscar Hammerstein wrote the words to the music. Perry Como made it a hit popular song and it is beautiful.
Special attention should be given to Steve Lawrence’s With so Little To Be Sure Of from Stephen Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle. I have several versions of this song but when Steve hits the ending it gives me goose bumps.
With a Song in my Heart,
Sherry
