Sherry’s Cherries: The Night Has a Thousand Eyes

I was 19 years old and a student at New York University. One day while walking on 8th Street, I came across a record store (remember those?). That’s when I discovered Carmen McRae and I fell in love with her music. When I was older and CDs came out, I tried to buy a CD of Carmen’s album, Second to None, but one hadn’t been made yet. One of my favorite songs is The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. This song has nothing to do with Bobby Vee’s The Night Has a Thousand Eyes which came out in the 60s. They are two completely different songs.

Because there was no CD available for Carmen’s album, I had my assistant send the album to a company which put it on a CD. When I received it back and heard the music, so many years later, I felt 19 again. Last night I went on Amazon to see if I could find a Second to None CD. There was only one copy available and it was close to $1,000!

Through the years I have collected so many CDs of my favorite female vocalists. There are Ella Fitzgerald, Sara Vaughan, Jo Stafford, Doris Day, Eydie Gorme, Dusty Springfield, Judy Garland, Karen Carpenter and so many more.

My next Sherry’s Cherries is dedicated to these wonderful female vocalists, who not only have spectacular voices but sang exquisite songs by the masters, Lorenz Hart, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and others.

This show is about an hour and fifteen minutes and begins with The Night Has a Thousand Eyes and ends with Where or When.
