Sherry’s Cherries – Take Me To The World

It is interesting that many talented artists throughout time have been fascinated with mannequins. Rod Serling wrote about them in The Twilight Zone episode, The After Hours. The legendary Stephen Sondheim collaborated with James Goldman (author of A Lion in Winter, Robin and Marian and Nicholas and Alexandra) to create a musical play for television in the l960’s called Evening Primrose early in their careers. Both The Twilight Zone and Evening Primrose had stories where the mannequins come to life.

In that television special Anthony Perkins, of Psycho, sang and his voice was quite good. It is also starred Charmian Carr from The Sound of the Music.

My favorite song from Evening Primrose was Take Me to the World. I play Judy Collins’ version of the song on our next show.

Photojournalist Brandy Isadora told the history of mannequins in her book, Mannequins: The First Supermodel. Photographs from that book appear above the blog and after the blog. Take a look at Lucille, one of my favorites.

The book itself has several funny stories regarding mannequins, including one about Salvador Dali. It is also interesting to see the make up on these mannequins and how similar the look is today.
