Sherry’s Cherries – Soundtracks and Singers

Some of the most beautiful melodies have come from the movies. Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond is happy to present some of this exquisite music with our show Soundtracks and Singers. Several years ago, I wrote a blog about Percy Faith called My Faith in Percy. He was a brilliant composer, conductor and arranger and I play several of his songs on this show. Look for Our Language of Love and Sayonara.

I wanted to give you a real preview to hopefully enjoy.

David Rose was a brilliant composer, songwriter and orchestra leader and I play several of his instrumentals. We start with Return to Paradise. I included October Mist simply because it is one of my favorites. Magic Mona…Phyllis Hyman’s voice captivates with her mystic lady of the zodiac, Magic Mona, from A Fish Called Wanda.

Elmer Bernstein (who is no relation to Leonard), although there is some resemblance, was a gifted composer and we feature his magnificent themes to Hawaii and Walk on the Wild Side.

One of my all time favorites is Hook – Flight to Neverland by John Williams. I always imagine my 4 cats around me as I fly through the air.

I saw Yul Brynner several times as the King in The King and I. On this show we play The March of the Siamese Children by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

Then we have Dimitri Tiomkin with the beautiful and haunting Friendly Persuasion.

We also feature Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. It is listed as a ‘Paul Sawtell’ song but it sounds like Frankie Avalon to me.

Yann Tiersen’s Amelie was a wonderful movie. The theme with the orchestra is lovely.

Johnny Mathis is always gifted and his Till Love Touches Your Life from Madron is spectacular. Pulsating and exhilerating.

We also feature the exotic Aberdeen Caper from The World of Suzie Wong starring the late William Holden. George Duning is the master of the sensual.

We also feature Glen Campbell’s True Grit, Andre Kostelanetz’s A Taste of Honey and Doris Day’s Secret Love which won an Academy Award.

I close with Michael Gore’s Defending your Life by the Hollywood Bowl orchestra conducted by John Mauceri. This was a great movie which should be seen by all. Written by Albert Brooks and acted by Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks, it tells of the possible afterlife with humor and thought provoking wisdom. Someone once asked Albert is he ever thought about the afterlife. He replied, “Have you seen Defending Your Life?” Great answer. Great film.

Have fun with this. I did.

With a song in my heart, Sherry
