Sherry’s Cherries – Return to Paradise

When I was a student at New York University, I was assigned by my professor, Marion Primont, to see a play on Broadway. Most of my classmates chose a Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill or Edward Albee. But Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme were appearing on Broadway with their show, Golden Rainbow. I had very little money in those days, and I loved Steve and Eydie. So, you guessed it. I chose Golden Rainbow.

My professor was somewhat horrified. She really wanted us to see a Williams or O’Neill. Fortunately for me, Professor Primont liked Steve and Eydie too. I wound up going to a Shakespeare play too, so it was a win win. I was just a little poorer.

Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme met as young singers on The Steve Allen Show. Their voices and personalities blended beautifully. They married, had a family and performed together for the rest of their lives. I saw Steve and Eydie in person many times, mostly in Vegas. Their voices were perfect, and they were so funny together. Eydie passed away a few years ago and Steve passed just recently. I imagine them singing together now. Thank God we, on earth, have their music. Of course. we play some of the music from Golden Rainbow and other songs of theirs.

On Sunday, June 9th, Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond pays tribute to some of the greatest singers and their songs.

The show is called Return to Paradise, so that is where we are headed. I have several versions of Return to Paradise, and they are mostly instrumental, but Nat King Cole makes this song his.

Besides Steve, Eydie and Nat you will hear Frank Sinatra, K.D. Lang, Barry Manilow, Keely Smith and many more.

Some of these songs have a sensual flare that you will notice with Bobby Goldsboro and Dusty Springfield. All in all, these are some real beauties and I hope you enjoy this one. We begin with Return to Paradise, and we close with Barry Manilow’s Best Seat in the House.

With a song in my heart,

Sherry
