Cole Porter was a genius. He wrote the words and composed the music to some of the most beautiful songs of his era. On our next Sherry’s Cherries, you will hear some of my favorite songs from Cole Porter and other masters of their game. I have 38 versions of Cole Porter’s Night and Day. So many singers have sung this song, including many singers of modern times, Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, and Michael Buble. I actually have three different versions of Night and Day all sung by Frank Sinatra. I will be playing the Night and Day from Sinatra and Strings.
Another one of Frank Sinatra’s classics is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s I Have Dreamed from The King and I which Frank later sang on his Concert disc.
When I was a child in Philadelphia, I couldn’t wait for Friday nights so that I could listen to Friday with Frank hosted by the late Sid Mark. Every Friday I would sing along with Frank.
On this show you will hear several Barbra Streisand songs from On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. Some beautiful music came from this Lerner & Lowe show and film. Listen also to the smooth voice of Nat King Cole. My mother loved Nat King Cole and I do too. He passed his velvety voice on to his daughter, Natalie.
Karen Carpenter had a uniquely beautiful voice and Richard was and is a masterful musician. The Carpenters’ Crystal Lullaby is a beautiful gem that is rarely heard. I’ve also included Bobby Goldsboro’s Summer the First Time because I love it. It is a very different kind of Bobby Goldsboro.
You will also hear my favorite version of the song, Sweet and Lovely, sung by Keely Smith. This show has a lot of love songs. Look for Dusty Springfield’s Just A Little Lovin’ and Engelbert Humperdinck’s After the Lovin’. Of course, you will hear some Johnny Mathis. I have more than 500 Johnny Mathis songs, so listen for him on all my favorites.
I think you will like this show. In a world that seems to be tilting on its axis, maybe music can have a healing balm.
With a song in my heart.
Sherry
