Sherry’s Cherries – KISMET

When my daughter told me there was a new movie called “Blue Moon” about Lorenz Hart, I immediately bought it. I love Larry Hart and have a photo of him above my work place in my art room. I have and play all his music by many artists on this station. Singers today still record his songs.

When I saw the movie (or part of the movie), I was devastated. My husband turned to me and asked,” Are you enjoying this?” I said, “No”. We turned it off and I threw it out. I had never done that before.

The creators of this film took what would have had to be one of the worst nights of someone’s life and made a film of it.

“Words and Music”, the l948 movie about Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart covered the beginning of their partnership, the trials and tribulations and the pinnacle of their success. Being Hollywood, the movie was partially unrealistic but it had the most beautiful music, great performances and a stellar performance by Micky Rooney as Lorenz Hart. It told their story.

2025’s “Blue Moon” quotes that Oscar Hammerstein apparently said that Larry Hart was one of the funniest men he ever met. I saw no humor in this movie. And realistic? Well, being Hollywood, we don’t know about that either.

The movie made me want to cry.

Everyone has problems. We go through life and enjoy the happy moments sprinkled in with the challenges.
Larry Hart had his challenges and life got difficult for him. Listen to his music and hear the words. They tell who Lorenz Hart was and how he felt. “My Funny Valentine”, “Where or When”, “Blue Moon”.

There is a reason artists today still record this music. It had passion, pathos and poignancy.

Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond will play several songs by Larry (I always do) and so many others.
Listen for Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Barry Manilow, Ne-Yo, Ella Fitzgerald, and the great Etta James with her rendition of At Last. The show begins with Kismet and closes with Rodgers and Hart’s “With A song in My Heart”.

Enjoy this one. I did. With a song in my heart, (Lorenz Hart’s words)

Sherry
