Who is the final arbiter of talent or ‘great talent’? As it is said, “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” and frankly, we all are the beholder. In the arts or show business some of the greatest talent never make it to the top, and some make it and then lose their place and then rise again.
Take Matt Monro. Ol’ Blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, said that Matt Monro was one of his favorite singers. He loved everything about Matt’s voice and phrasing. Matt had a lot of success but he deserved so much more. One of my listeners asked me if I had any Matt Monro. I did and I then went back and listened to all my Matt music and I fell in love with his voice. I then went on Amazon and bought several more discs and a video. I was that hooked.
Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond will pay tribute to Matt on our next show, How Little We Know, because, in the end, it truly is how little we know. Because of the DMCA rules I am limited on the number of Matt songs I can play in one show and I play what I can on this show!!! And I will play more in continuing shows.
Now, Frank Sinatra was a different story. He reached a pinnacle in the 1940’s with the bobbysoxers standing outside his venues and swooning. But by the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the bobbysoxers had grown up and music tastes were changing into the soon to emerge Rock and Roll. Frank’s popularity plummeted and he was truly devastated. I also believe Frank lost some of his popularity because of his divorce from his first wife Nancy, with whom he had 3 children.
In the early 50’s From Here to Eternity was a popular book about World War 2. Frank desperately wanted to play the part of Maggio and Ava Gardner, his second wife and a top star at that time, pressured the powers that were, to hire Frank. The movie was great and Frank’s performance won him an Academy Award and he was back on top again.
Then, with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, he created the ‘Rat Pack’ and Frank continued to perform with the Rat Pack and by himself for many years more. He retired once but he missed the performing and the adulation. He had to make a comeback and he proudly explained ‘that Ol’ Blue Eyes’ was back. Frank continued to perform through the rest of his life until his health reminded him that time was passing and he truly needed to retire.
I have all of Frank’s music and I believe I now have most of Matt Monro’s.
Listen to these great voices and songs. Along with Matt and Frank, you will hear from Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Andy Williams, Barbra Streisand and more. These are some beautiful pieces of music. I predict……you won’t be disappointed.
We begin with a Frank song which is only on one album and I mean album. The Album was called ’65 and it was never made into a CD. Yet….when you look it up they say this album is so good, that if you have one Sinatra album, this should be it. I am not sure about that, BUT the song Stay With Me is from the movie, The Cardinal with Thomas Tryon. The music was by Jerome Moross and the lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and it is beautiful. It is rare and I hope you enjoy it.
We begin with Stay with Me and we close with Nat King and Natalie Cole’s Unforgettable. Truly they were and are Unforgettable.
Happy listening.
With a song in my heart, Sherry
