My generation was the one of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Moody Blues, etc. I love that music and have a lot of it, but my heart belongs to the generation that came before me.
I love the movie musicals from the 1930s and I also love the big band era. When I think of this music I think of Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, etc.
I’ve always said that one of the first people I would hug on the other side was Lorenz Hart. Larry needed our hugs. He was a genius who never quite accepted himself but Larry’s music stole my heart. You can believe this story or not, but it’s true. I used to put music lists on my personal music system with one of my best friends, Cindy. One day we were sitting side by side and she was creating a new playlist for me. Suddenly she scooted her chair back and said, “Do you smell that! It’s a cigar! Oh my God, it’s so strong!” I laughed and told her that I thought it was Lorenz Hart. We were doing a play list of his music. He smoked cigars and he always he had cigar smoke floating around him. Cindy and I never forgot that.
The music you will hear on this Sherry’s Cherries will be some of the great music of the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s.
For a music collector like me, I may have 32 versions of Night and Day by Cole Porter. I have 30 versions of Where or When. When I choose a song to play for you as part of Sherry’s Cherries, I listen to every single version. I try to pick my favorite, but there are usually 6 favorites, and frankly, it is hard to choose. That is why I have chosen some of the singers from the past and some who are popular today.
You will hear artists like Artie Shaw (who married the gorgeous Ava Gardner), Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and The Fabulous Dorsey’s, Tommy and Jimmy. You will hear from some artists who came later but sing this music to perfection like Keely Smith and Johnny Mathis.
I am dedicating this music to my daughter, Brandy, who came so much after this music was popular, but she loves it too. When I told her I was going to do a show about the big band era, she smiled broadly and said, “Aw, Benny Goodman!”
Sometimes the show will start about three minutes after schedule. You’ll know you’re at the destination when you hear Long Ago and Far Away by Jo Stafford.
If you like the show let me know. With a song in my heart, Sherry.
