Broadway. The lights, the energy, the anticipation. . . Broadway has always had a certain feel about it. Some of the greatest creators and performers have contributed to this art form. Many of my generation and later generations have experienced movies like The Sound of Music, South Pacific, and West Side Story on film, but these films and so many more came from the Broadway stage.
On Thursday, January 23rd at 4pm Eastern / 1pm Pacific time, Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond will Pay Tribute To Broadway Show Stoppers, Love Songs and Songs of Philosophy. These are some of my favorite songs. Some are older and some are newer. Featured will be creators like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, Marvin Hamlisch and other geniuses.
In years past, the music of Broadway became part of your “hit parade”. These songs like Memory (from Cats) became #1 hit songs and many singers would perform their own version of it.
When a Broadway show became successful, there was no doubt that Hollywood would want to make a film and that is how Carousel, Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera came to a movie theater near you.
In recent times, Disney has taken advantage of the success of the film The Lion King which they promptly turned into a Broadway show. Some might call this a reversal of fortune.
I hope you can join us. I have spent thousands of hours listening to this music to choose the songs that reflect the different aspects of Broadway.
With a Song in My Heart.
