I once mentioned I was a sucker for lost continents, fascinating legends and mystical realms.
In 1954, Lerner and Loewe produced Brigadoon, first as a Broadway show (1947) and then as a movie. The movie starred the incredible Gene Kelly and the beautiful Cyd Charisse. This musical made you want to believe in the impossible. The music “Heather on the Hill” was magical, and “Almost Like Being In Love” became a staple for every singer… including me. That was my audition song. I later realized that the notes were all written so that practically every singer, even those with a very limited range, like me, could master its beauty.
Thank you, Lerner and Loewe, for making me believe in magic and making me believe I could sing. Julie Andrews’ version of “Almost Like Being In Love” is incredible. Whenever I hear her, even I can believe that I could swim Loch Lomond and be home in half an hour…and I can’t swim.
