Sherry’s Cherries: And the Winner Is . . . Or Should Have Been Part Two

Andy Williams sang some of the best songs from movies. Think of A Summer’s Place, Charade, The Days of Wine and Roses and more. A funny story that Andy used to tell was that he sang several Academy Award nominated songs on the Oscars and some of these songs won the award. Andy’s mom would tell everyone she knew that her son won many Academy Awards. He tried to explain to her that he only “sang” the songs but that the music was composed by other people. But to Andy’s Mama, he was the winner and always would be. Andy’s career spanned his entire life and he was famous for his music and television specials.

Part two of And the Winner Is or Should Have Been pays tribute to Academy Award winning and nominated songs. The show debuts on Sunday, March 26th on Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond. We cover the years from the 1950s to the 1980s.

I have often reflected how Broadway contributed to a great deal of movie music. Songs like Tonight and Maria from West Side Story; Shall We Dance and Hello Young Lovers from The King and I; and last but certainly not least, there’s I’ll Know and A Woman In Love from Guys and Dolls. There are so many more. Once a Broadway show became a hit, it soon became a movie, but the songs were never in the running for an Academy Award.

When my husband and I married in 1969 the most popular “wedding songs” were More (theme to Mondo Cane) and The Look of Love. Choosing today, I believe I would choose Larry Hart’s Where or When

You will hear from musicians like Percy Faith, Henry Mancini, Burt Bachrach, and singers like Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Glen Campbell, The Carpenters, Vic Damone, and Andy Williams.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did putting it together. I know it is guaranteed to bring back memories. Thank you, dear listeners, for sharing my passion for this music. It was always my dream. The show begins with Gigi by Vic Damone and closes with John Williams’ Pocahontas: “Colors of the Wind”.

With a song in my heart,

Sherry
