John Wayne The Searchers

A Tribute To Western Movie Soundtracks

Some nights, all I listen to are movie soundtracks.  Some of the best soundtracks are from western films.  In my youth, there were over thirty western shows on television.  My favorite western character was Adam Cartwright from Bonanza.  My best friend’s favorite was Sugarfoot.  I could sing all of the theme songs.  My best friend learned the theme to Davey Crocket and she sang it so well, that the principal sent her to every room in school to sing the song.  My husband even had a coon skin hat.  Recently at his class reunion, his best friend from childhood reminded him that they had a fist fight over a Davey Crocket card.   His friend remembered it as if it were yesterday, and he even remembered which card it was.

In reality, western stories began in the movies.  Since the beginning of film, stories of the old west have been a popular genre.  Stars like Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and the immortal John Wayne made their mark in these kinds of films.

The music was spectacular.  Imagine The Magnificent Seven without that rousing film score by Elmer Bernstein.  This music stands by itself as exquisitely enjoyable.  I know.  I listen to it a lot.

Join me on Thursday, December 12th, at 4pm Eastern / 1pm Pacific Time, when Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond Pays Tribute to some of my favorite western soundtracks.  Some of these you may already know.  But, I bet I will introduce you to some new and wonderful music.  Composers like Hugo Friedhofer, Dimitri Tiomkin, Alex North and Elmer Bernstein are just some of the composers you will hear.  If soundtracks are your thing, tune in.  You won’t be disappointed.

And if soundtracks aren’t your thing, try us anyways.  You might find that you like sitting tall in the saddle.  Until then, adios amigos.
