Rodgers and Hart: Where or When

It seems we stood and talked like this before

We looked at each other in the same way then

But I can’t remember where or when

The clothes you’re wearing are the clothes you wore

The smile you are smiling you were smiling then

But I can’t remember where or when

I once blogged that one of the people I wish I could have hugged was Lorenz Hart.  This remarkably talented man simply never thought enough of himself.  Although long on talent, he was short of stature and this affected him deeply, too deeply.  Many great men have been short in stature but Larry Hart was a romantic and all you have to do is listen to his lyrics, and you can hear that they speak of love and longing.

Larry’s talent was so great that Richard Rodgers understood and allowed for Larry’s lateness and undependability while working together.  In truth, Larry drank too much and he would disappear for periods of time leaving his partner in despair.  Dick knew that Larry would be back but who knew where or when.  Ah, but when he did come back, what magical lyrics he created.  It’s been said that Larry’s lyrics raised the standard for Broadway Musicals.

Richard Rodgers was a legend in his lifetime.  His career spanned 60 years from his days at Columbia University where he met the wonderful Larry Hart.  After Larry’s passing, Richard began working with the gentle and optimistic Oscar Hammerstein.  After Oscar Hammerstein passed, Richard Rodgers wrote the words and music for the Broadway Show, No Strings.  But he was older.  He too had suffered from illness and on some level I believe he was tormented by the ghosts of both Larry and Oscar.  He knew his greatest days were behind him and you could see it in photographs.

I always sign off on my blogs “With A Song In My Heart”.  These lyrics belong to Lorenz Hart.  Rodgers and Hart created magic and singers of the present day still sing their music.

On Thursday, September 8th, at 1pm Eastern / 9am Pacific Time Movies Broadway Singers and Beyond will pay tribute to composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist, Lorenz Hart.  I hope you enjoy this one.  This music is some of my favorite.

With A Song In My Heart,

Sherry
